Cats should be a fed both good quality pet food that can be found at The Ark Vet Hospital, and also a balance of natural foods – like raw meat, meaty bones and vegetables. Kittens should be offered small amounts of food at least 4 times a day and water should be available at all times. Cats should be offered food 3-4 times a day throughout their life. As they grow, their portion sizes should be slightly increased.

Younger than 6 months of age, raw meat that is fed should preferably be minced or breast – easy on the baby teeth of the kittens.

Between four to six months of age their permanent teeth begin to erupt and grow rapidly – this is the time when it is more suitable to introduce raw meaty bones, at the rate of about one per week (e.g. chicken neck)

You should try to avoid large bones or knuckle bones as these can cause the teeth of the cats to crack.

Kittens and cats should NEVER be fed: onions, garlic, chocolate, coffee or caffeine products, bread dough, avocado, grapes, raisins, sultanas, currants, nuts including macadamia nuts, fruit stones (pits) e.g. mango seeds, apricot stones; fruit seeds, corncobs; tomatoes, mushrooms; the one type of fish constantly, cooked bones, small pieces of raw bone or fatty trimmings

If you are ever unsure of what to feed your kitten, the Ark Vet is always happy to provide you with nutritional advice.
