Fertilizers

Generally, fertilizers cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation which can involve signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea, hyper salivation, lethargy and abdominal pain. Because fertilizers are usually a combination of ingredients, the effects following ingestion may differ.

Symptoms are rather dependant on the composition of the fertiliser, and can include:

•  iron toxicity – depending on iron concentration

•  seizures and pancreatitis – if fertiliser contains insecticides

•  gastrointestinal tract irritation – if caustic

•  ulceration

•  gastrointestinal blockage

•  vomiting

•  diarrhoea

•  constipation

Generally the symptoms are more severe if a large amount of fertilizer is ingested or if additives like insecticides or iron are part of the fertilizer mix.

If you suspect your pet has ingested fertilizer you should contact your local vet immediately for further advice. For the majority, the effects of ingestion are self-limiting and along with supportive veterinary care, are usually resolved within 24-28 hours.
